Keloid Treatment

Keloid treatment refers to a variety of methods used to manage and reduce the appearance of keloid scars, which are thick, raised scars that form due to an overgrowth of collagen. Keloids can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the chest, shoulders, and back.

The treatment of keloids typically involves a combination of surgical and non-surgical methods. One common non-surgical approach is the use of silicone sheets or gels, which are applied to the keloid to flatten and reduce its size over time.

Corticosteroid injections are another common treatment method, which involve injecting a steroid medication directly into the keloid to reduce inflammation and flatten the scar tissue. The injections may need to be repeated several times over a period of several months to achieve the desired result.

Surgical removal of the keloid may also be an option, but there is a risk that the keloid may return or become even larger following surgery. To minimize this risk, radiation therapy may be used in conjunction with surgery to prevent the regrowth of the keloid.

Other treatment options include cryotherapy, which involves freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen, and laser therapy, which uses focused light energy to break down the keloid tissue.

It is important to have a consultation with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to determine the most suitable keloid treatment method for you and to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the procedure. While keloid treatment can be effective in reducing the appearance of keloid scars, individual results may vary, and the treatment may not be suitable for all types of keloids.
