Frequently asked questions
During a hair transplant, hair follicles are typically harvested from the back or sides of the scalp, where hair is more resistant to balding, and then transplanted into the balding or thinning areas.
Yes, a hair transplant is considered a permanent solution for hair loss because the transplanted hair follicles are resistant to the hormone DHT, which is responsible for hair loss in male and female pattern baldness.
It typically takes several months for the transplanted hair to start growing normally. Patients may start to see noticeable growth within 3 to 6 months after the procedure, with full results becoming apparent after 12 to 18 months.
Like any surgical procedure, hair transplants carry some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and temporary shock loss (temporary shedding of transplanted hair). However, these risks are usually minimal when the procedure is performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon.
The cost of a hair transplant can vary depending on factors such as the extent of hair loss, the type of procedure chosen, the geographic location of the clinic, and the experience of the surgeon. On average, hair transplant procedures can range from ₹50,000 to ₹1.5L.
Male androgenetic alopecia is usually a progressive condition and the hairline
recedes despite best of the treatments. So it is advisable to undergo hair
transplantation once the hair loss stabilises and the hair line reaches a
particular stage which is usually 26 to 30 years of age. It can be done in
younger individuals less than 26 year age provided that he is ready to
undergo one more transplantation if at all the need arises and the pre-existing
hairline recedes further.
We do provide the discharge summary which includes method of surgery
done, number of grafts/follicles implanted and post operative advice. We also
provide ‘fit to fly’ certificate who intends to travel via air immediately after the
surgery.
No, the hairs are extracted completely along with the roots in the donor area. So they do not
grow back. However the number of hairs in the donor area is so much that even if one in four
follicular units is extracted, the remaining follicles which grow downwards cover the remaining
scars and make it unrecognisable when the hairs grow.
If you have been using minoxidil, then you have to stop it for a week at least before surgery.
However it is not mandatory. Other drugs like NSAIDS, aspirin have to be stopped 3 days before
surgery. Anti-hypertensives and anti-diabetics have to be taken even on the day of surgery and
thereafter.
Hair transplantation is entirely done under local anaesthesia. So it is a
painless procedure. However while giving local anaesthesia, there will be mild
pricking pain which will be reduced as much as possible using vibrators and
very thin needles.
It is a very minimally invasive surgery. So there is negligible loss of blood.
This is the most common question asked by everybody. The transplanted hairs undergo a bit of
stress during extraction, holding and implantation. Hence most of the transplanted hairs shed
from 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. They start growing from 2 to 3 months onwards. By the end of
6 months, 40-50% of growth is seen. For complete results, it may take upto 12 to 18 months.
On an average most of the patients will notice results by the end of a year after surgery.
Yes, the hairs used for transplantation are selected from the safe donor area on the occipital
area. The hairs in this area are DHT resistant and usually do not undergo miniaturization till old
age. So rest be assured that as long as you have hairs on the back of the scalp, so long will
your transplanted hairs stay usually upto the age of 60-70. Don’t be fooled by the clinics saying
that they are providing 100% guarantee on transplanted hairs. There is science behind hair loss
and hair transplantation which every person having baldness should understand before going
for transplantation.
After a hair transplant procedure, the amount of time required for recovery,
healing and growth of the new hairs, is extended over a period of 12 months.
Between 2 to 3 weeks after a hair transplant procedure most patients
experience a phenomenon known as “shock hair loss“, where the new hair
grafts enter a resting phase and the hairs are shed.
This is a perfectly normal and natural process that most patients experience
after a hair transplant procedure. There is nothing to worry about.
After the shedding of the newly transplanted grafts your new, healthy hairs will
soon begin to grow in their place.
In about 2 to 2.5 months your transplanted hair will be entering its normal
growth cycle and grow approximately 1.5 cm every month.
From 9th month onwards, the transplanted hair will improve in texture and at
the 12-month mark, it will get thicker blending with the person’s own natural
hair structure.
Women do have hair loss called female pattern hair loss. The hairs undergo thinning and the
central parting will widen with time. This may be again due to hormonal imbalance or chronic
micronutrient deficiency. Once the underlying cause is identified and repaired, women can
undergo hair transplantation. In CUTIBLESS we offer female hair transplantation depending
upon the grade of baldness and hair loss is treated holistically.
2 months after hair transplantation, one can opt for laser helmet therapy which will boost the
growing transplanted hairs as well as the existing fine hairs. This can be combined with Platelet
Rich Plasma(PRP) treatment every month for 6 months.
When done by a qualified doctor and experienced team in a hospital set up, there are almost no
side effects from hair transplantation. Mild pain for 1-2 days, temporary swelling on forehead are
rarely seen which are temporary and will subside in a few days.
Complications such as infections of the scalp after a hair transplant procedure may occur when
done in unsterile conditions and using unsterile instruments and untrained professionals.
Few folliculitis may appear on both donor and recipient areas which are sterile pustules and will
reduce on their own.
Normally in a virgin scalp, the best donor is the back of the scalp which is a u shaped area. It is
called ‘safe donor area’. It contains hair follicles which are resistant to DHT and never go thin or
bald till old age. In a lifetime upto 3500 to 4000 follicular units or grafts can be harvested. But
these are not sufficient to cover the scalp in advanced grades of baldness. In such cases,
follicles can be harvested from the beard and body to cover the entire scalp.
Usually after a transplantation session, it takes 9 to 12 months for the hairs to grow. In
advanced grades of baldness, in one session it is difficult to achieve maximum density and
coverage. In such cases it is recommended to go for one more session after a year for best
results. So waiting for a year in between two transplantations is imperative.
Yes you can cut or shave hair 1 month after the procedure. The hairs are your own and they can
be handled absolutely normal with cutting, shaving, dying and coloring.
Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP) has its own benefits along with the transplantation. The PRP is full
of growth factors which will help in boosting the growth of the transplanted hairs as well as the
existing hairs on the scalp. The time taken for the transplanted hairs to grow will be lessened by
the addition of PRP. So the final results will be more augmented than hair transplant alone.
